Spring in the Smokies is the most variable season in the South. A May trip might include shorts weather, frost, a thunderstorm, and a perfect blue afternoon, sometimes all in the same week. Packing for it is part planning, part hedging. Here is the list that has worked for cabin guests staying at Thistle Britches Cabin.
## The weather you are actually packing for
Pigeon Forge spring weather, in plain terms:
- Highs in the 60s to mid 70s for most days
- Lows in the 40s and occasionally the upper 30s
- Afternoon thunderstorms become more common in May
- Higher elevations in the park can be 15 to 20 degrees cooler than town
That last point catches most visitors. A trail near Clingmans Dome can feel like late winter even when Pigeon Forge feels like spring. Pack for both.
## Clothing
A workable wardrobe for a four or five-day spring stay:
- Two pairs of long pants, one comfortable and one for hiking
- One pair of shorts
- Three short-sleeve shirts
- Two long-sleeve shirts
- One warm layer, fleece or sweater
- A light rain shell that fits over the warm layer
- One nicer outfit if you plan a sit-down restaurant dinner
- Swimsuits for the hot tub
- Pajamas, including one warm option for cool nights
Layering is the whole game. A morning hike at high elevation might call for the fleece. The same afternoon at the cabin will be shorts and a tee.
## Shoes
Three pairs cover almost any spring trip:
- Real hiking shoes with grip, not running shoes
- A comfortable walking pair for town and the cabin deck
- A pair you do not mind getting muddy or wet
The trails are often wet in spring. Streams cross many of them. Sneakers will be soaked by lunch.
## Toiletries
The basics, plus a few spring-specific items most people forget:
- Sunscreen, even when it is cool, the elevation gets you
- Bug spray, ticks are real in May
- After-sun lotion
- Lip balm, the air at higher elevations is drier
- A small first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic, and ibuprofen
The cabin has soap, shampoo, and basic supplies, but bring your own preferences.
## Kitchen and grocery
The kitchen at the cabin has the basics: cookware, plates, utensils, coffee maker. What it does not have is your specific brand of coffee, your favorite oil, or any spices beyond salt and pepper.
A small kitchen kit to bring from home:
- Your coffee of choice and filters if you are particular
- Olive oil in a small bottle, if you cook
- A few of your favorite spices in a zip bag
- Aluminum foil for grilling
- A sharp knife if you really cook, the cabin knives are basic
Grocery list is best built before you leave home. Food City on the Parkway has almost everything.
## Outdoor and trail
A small daypack per adult, with:
- Two water bottles or a hydration bladder
- A trail snack like bars or trail mix
- A small first aid kit
- A paper map or downloaded offline map of any planned hike
- A whistle, if you go off the main trails
- A small light, in case a hike runs late
- Sunglasses and a hat
The most common mistake: cabin guests hike with sneakers, a bottle of water, and no map. They make it back fine ninety percent of the time. Pack like the day will go long.
## Hot tub and deck
A few small things make the deck and hot tub better:
- Two towels per person, the cabin has some but extras are useful
- A robe if you are coming from a cool walk to the hot tub
- A small Bluetooth speaker for music on the deck
- A book per person
- A deck of cards
These are the things you do not realize you needed until you wish you had them.
## Rain plan
Pack as if one full day of your trip will be rainy. That is not pessimism, it is May in the Smokies. If you have:
- A rain shell each
- One indoor activity in mind for the rainy afternoon
- A few easy meals planned for cabin nights
then a rainy day becomes a slow cabin day rather than a ruined day. Many guests report the rainy day is their favorite of the trip.
## Documents and small things
A few small items that save trouble:
- Your driver's license, of course
- Cabin confirmation, printed or saved
- A few cash bills for tipping
- A small portable charger for phones
- Reusable water bottles, the cabin has filtered water
## What to skip
A few things you do not need to bring:
- A grill or charcoal, the deck grill is propane
- Coffee maker, the cabin has one
- Toilet paper or paper towels, the cabin is stocked
- A hair dryer, every cabin has one
Less is more for a cabin stay. Pack tight and leave room for whatever you bring back.
## Plan your stay
If you are putting a spring cabin trip together, [check our calendar](/availability) for open dates. [Contact us](/contact) with any specific questions about what the cabin includes. The [things to do page](/things-to-do) helps with the activity side of the plan.
Pack for the weather you might get, not the weather you hope for. A cabin makes any of it better.
